Simple is best — you shine, not the clothes.

Try to stick to three colours or fewer for the whole family. Neutrals, soft tones, and natural textures like linen, knits, and denim photograph beautifully.

Large logos, neon colours, busy patterns, or everyone wearing identical outfits can distract from the connection in your photos.

A helpful tip: choose Mum’s outfit first, then build the rest of the family around it. Texture often photographs better than patterns because it adds depth without overwhelming the image.

Children respond best to connection, not pressure.

Rather than telling them they need to “behave” or “smile for photos,” it helps to frame the session as something fun you’re doing together.

During the session, I often give kids little roles like spinning, whispering a secret to Mum, or running in for a cuddle. These small prompts help create natural smiles and genuine interaction.

Wiggly, shy, or silly energy is completely normal — and often leads to the most beautiful images.

Arriving fed, rested, and unhurried makes a big difference for everyone.

Kids might run, laugh, get shy, or change moods quickly — and that’s perfectly okay. If someone needs a break, we pause, reset, and follow their lead.

Some of the most meaningful photographs come from those unscripted moments: the cuddles, the giggles, and the little in-between interactions.

You don’t need perfect outfits, perfect behaviour, or Pinterest-perfect poses — just come ready to enjoy time together.

Cake smash sessions are designed to be playful and baby-led.

It helps to schedule the session around your baby’s best wake window, and a small snack beforehand is perfectly fine.

A few days before the session, letting your baby explore cake, icing, or other soft foods can help them feel more comfortable with the texture.

On the day, it’s helpful to bring a towel, a change of clothes for baby (and sometimes for you!), and a sippy cup or bottle.

Some babies dive straight in, while others take their time. If your little one feels overwhelmed, we simply pause, cuddle, and let curiosity take over.

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s play.
